Great Dikes of the Spanish PeaksThe Great Dikes were formed about the same time as the Spanish Peaks, Mt. Mestas and Silver Mountain. At the time these formations were formed, they were located several miles underground below many layers of sedimentary rock. Over time, as the ground rose and the softer rock was eroded away, these igneous intrusions were exposed. There are essentially three different sets of dikes. One set emanates radially from the West Spanish Peak. The second set emanates radially from Silver Mountain. The third set crosses the landscape in a roughly N80E direction. The dikes in this third set are roughly parallel to one another and are among the longest of the dikes.

Cuchara. Cuchara, Colorado is situated on the eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the heart of the Cucharas River Valley. La Veta. La Veta, Colorado is situated on the eastern side of La Veta Pass through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and at the northern opening of the Cuchara River Valley. Just south of town is the foot of the West Spanish Peak. At the southern edge of town is the eighteen hole, Tom Weiskopf designed Grandote Golf Course. Stonewall. Stonewall is a village located at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on Highway 12.
