Your Guide to Las Animas County and Huerfano County in Southern Colorado
Fort Francisco MuseumFRANCISCO FORT was built in Colorado Territory in 1862 and may well be the only adobe fort left in the state in private ownership today. Interpretive exhibits depict many facets of pioneer life. These include a country store, a ranch/tack room, fashions, housewares, furniture, fauna, musical instruments, military items, photographs and all types of antiques. A letter written and signed by Abraham Lincoln in 1850 remains a favorite exhibit. The frontier plaza was originally fortified for protection from the Native American tribes of the Cucharas Valley. OTHER BUILDINGS comprising Francisco Fort Museum include the Ritter Schoolhouse, a log building from 1876 and furnished with old-time furnishings; a saloon built in the late 1870s featuring antique bar and backbar, barbershop and other exhibits; an early frontier log cabin housing the blacksmith display; a doctor's office complete with pharmacy; and an outdoor collection of farm equipment, wagons and buggies, a handmade sleigh and may other unique and useful tools.
