Monument LakeMonument Lake is located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on Highway 12, 37 miles west of Trinidad. This high-altitude lake is owned by the City of Trinidad. In 1937, the WPA built the resort which still is in operation. The lake's name came from a rock formation that once stood in its center, 15 feet above water. The formation was said to represent two Indian Chiefs. Monument Lake is a favorite among local fishermen. The lake has pedal boats and is stocked with brown and rainbow trout, kokanee salmon, and splake. The Monument Lake complex originally included a fish hatchery and a zoo. Though now unused, these structures, charming examples of the WPA at it's best, can be seen below the damn east of the Lake.
