Monument Lake

Monument Lake is located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on Highway 12, 37 miles west of Trinidad.

This high-altitude lake is owned by the City of Trinidad. In 1937, the WPA built the resort which still is in operation. The lake's name came from a rock formation that once stood in its center, 15 feet above water. The formation was said to represent two Indian Chiefs.

Monument Lake is a favorite among local fishermen. The lake has pedal boats and is stocked with brown and rainbow trout, kokanee salmon, and splake.

The Monument Lake complex originally included a fish hatchery and a zoo. Though now unused, these structures, charming examples of the WPA at it's best, can be seen below the damn east of the Lake.

The resort includes 13 cabins, RV and tent sites, a bath house, laundry, recreation room and a store.
