Simpson's RestSimpson's Rest is the sandstone bluff rising to the north of Trinidad. You can't miss Simpson's Rest---It's the one with the giant lighted "TRINIDAD" sign on it. From the top of Simpson's rest, you can view Trinidad, the Purgatoire River Valley, the huge expanse of Las Animas County's eastern prairie. Simpson's Rest was named for George S. Simpson (1818-1885), a restless, charming, and often irresponsible frontiersman who settled in the Trinidad area in the 1860's with his wife, Juana Suaso and daughter Isabel. He was county clerk for a time and a member of the first public school board. In his later years he wrote prose and poetry (according to his granddaughter, the Rest was his favorite place to write), and often submitted articles for the eastern U.S. newspapers about the West he loved. Simpson is buried atop the Rest. Simpson's Rest is now a city park. To get to it, follow Nevada St. north to the Masonic Cemetary, then turn left. Be careful. The road is neither very wide nor very good, with an abrupt drop on one side.
