StonewallStonewall is a village located at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It grew around a large gap in the Dakota Wall from which it takes it's name. The elevation is around 8,000 feet. As were most towns in the Purgatoire River Valley, it was first populated in the 1860's by Hispanic settlers from the Mora, New Mexico area. One of the first sttlers in Stonewall was named James Stoner, and it has been said the Dakota Wall the dominates the landscape was originally known as "Stoner's Wall". It has long been a favored retreat, known for it's quiet, Alpine beauty. The Stonewall Country Club celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2004.
